Seasons Spiral Forth

about

This was composed on guitar just as the NY area was getting hit by the 2020 pandemic. The original intention was to record it simply and quickly, and try, pretty naively and unrealistically, to write and record something along the lines of a song a day.
That impulse was a nod towards the Decameron by Boccaccio, in which a tale was told each day/night by a group holed up in seeming safety as the Bubonic plague ravaged the world around them. Several months on, this is the first completed recording, although there are about a half dozen other reasonable candidates vying to be next.
Many of the things I write seem to have a visual component in my mind to the notes, and harmonies, and rhythms. The visuals for this one definitely involved spinning and spiraling, and very little settling down. It was started just about as Spring began, and that created the idea of the spiraling cycles of seasons of any kind.
Forth is in the title as a bit of a pun because much of what the guitar does on this song is played in fourths (with an occasional third or fifth at times). The pun is a nod of sorts to the great Kenny Wheeler who often titled his wonderful compositions that way.
If I unconsciously stole the feel for this somewhere, it'd be from a beautiful tune called Up in the Air, written by Steve Morse, and played by him and Steve Howe on a Dregs album called Industry Standard. If Up in the Air and the beginning of David Crosby's Deja Vu spent the night together, Seasons Spiral Forth could be what the child of that union might look like.
