Hoping Hopes

about

Hoping Hopes is more than an idle passtime. It's part of a positive mindset-if those hopes are from a good place and directed towards a positive outcome. It goes along with the Zoroastrian creed of "Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds". That sentiment, of course, can be found elsewhere, but it's somehow appropriate to my song title. I felt that there was a yearning and optimistic quality to the harmony and melodies here, so that gave birth to the title.
My formative listening years included lots of Todd Rundgren and Stevie Wonder in the 70's, Through them and others, I've developed an affinity for extended and altered chords. This song is built around major 7ths, Major 9ths, and 6/9 chords. Playing around with them was the genesis here.
After the basic structure of the song emerged, I heard some really nice horn arrangements in a Quintet led by pianist Aaron Parks. That was soon followed by hearing guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel's music arranged for a Big Band. Those inspired my attempts here to add softsynth horns and a flute to accompany a synth pad that's kind of string like. Voila, my arrangement was fleshed out way beyond how it once existed on an acoustic guitar. Personally, it was a kick for me to do the kind of very simple writing and arranging I did for these softsynths, and I'll hope to add that to my future bag of tricks when writing and recording. As someone who's primarily a bassist and guitarist, it's very cool to do.
Here's to hoping our hopes that may bring positive outcomes to ourselves and others. If that lofty goal is too much, at least it'll be nice for slow dancing with your sweetie!
