The Brink of Something

about

This is a totally new take on a song of mine that dates back to the early 1990's. It was recorded then on a cassette port-a-studio, and done in an original music project I had going for a while. It got a pretty good reaction, and I always thought to re-do it on a modern DAW and with any knowledge I picked up along the way. I also have recorded a lot of instrumentals lately, and wanted to revisit some songs I'd written music and lyrics for and try to sing them again, while my older self still has the voice to do that.
Back then, the Cold War had just ended, Apartheid was ending, the Clinton era was beginning, and things generally seemed pretty good. That'll clue you into the lyrical content that goes beyond those things to the idea of a Golden Age or Paradise Earth.
Fast forward to the present with the lingering pandemic, a swing to authoritarian oafs "with a following" in charge of powerful nations, microsecond attention spans, and the fear set brought on by awful levels of gun violence, and you may wonder why have faith in the things alluded to here? Why not have that faith in the inherent goodness in much of humanity? People are capable of great and good things. Let's try not to forget that.

lyrics

Someday I hope to see life much better between them
Kicking out all in the way losing our causes for grievance
If you're there I will wave, jump and dance and laugh loudly
Until it happens please stay, hope and pray and sing proudly

We are on the brink of something, so big and wild, beg for more now
Sitting here we'll think of something, needed still unlock the door
Standing on the brink of something, can't wait for it be patient, child
Marching on our voices all ring, knowing we'll keep on along

Somehow Ive got to know why we are wasting our time in
Getting past what's in the way, we've got to find paths around it
If you will stay here with me we can all plan celebration
Saving up all for the day, the ending of our live's tribulation

We are on the brink...

Sometime it's sure to be, getting so much better and better
Safe here, happy and free, pushing ourselves forward together
Right now we've got the choice, peace and joy all surrounding
Til then raise up your voice, singing our song all resounding.

We are on the brink...
